Russia has been forever trying to stamp out Ukrainian identity-so this is not a recent event. the real issue IMO is the source of natural gas and oil to Western Europe and the possible development of the oil and gas fields in Kurdistan. If and when Kurdistan goes online it will feed Western Europe and discount Russia.
