Das IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) beschreibt sich selbst als “die größte technische Fachorganisation der Welt – sie fördert die Entwicklung und Anwendung der Elektrotechnik und verwandter Wissenschaften zum Nutzen der Menschheit, den Fortschritt des Berufsstandes und das Wohlergehen unserer Mitglieder.”
Das IEEE, oft englisch als Eye-triple-E bezeichnet, ging aus zwei Vorgängerorganisationen hervor. Im Jahr 1884 wurde das American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE) gegründet und 1912 das Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE). 1963 vereinigten sich die beiden Institutionen zum IEEE. Diese Organisation veröffentlicht eine Reihe von Journalen, lokale Sektionen und mehrere große Fachgemeinschaften, wie zum Beispiel die IEEE Computer Society. Dass IEEE hat heute mehr als 419.000 Mitglieder in über 160 Ländern sowie 342 Sektionen in zehn geografischen Regionen weltweit.”
